Pro-Tools is the audio and MIDI recording, editing and sequencing software you'll find in the majority of professional studios around the world.
While this widespread use by professional audio engineers, and the name ‘Pro’ in its title, might imply it’s difficult to learn and use, the truth is quite the opposite. In fact, when I compare Pro-Tools to a simpler Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) Application like Apple’s ‘GarageBand’ for instance, I find it’s only the initial surface-level operations one encounters in GarageBand that can be considered easier to learn, use and understand in the GarageBand environment. This is due to the more complex functionality of Garage Band, like Audio/MIDI Editing, parameter automation and FX manipulation being largely ‘hidden’ from the user in the friendly interface it presents. While this is all well and good for beginners, and those who never need to stray beyond the surface for their general DAW software needs, it quickly becomes tedious to manage for anyone who gets more adventurous with their use of a program like GarageBand. This is where more fully-featured programs like Pro-Tools, that target the professional market, actually become easier to use than programs like GarageBand, because all of their main functionality is out there in the open, so you’re not forced to dig into obscure areas to uncover it. You’ll find Pro-Tools offers much more flexibility and power for using such features too… Pro-Tools does also present some seriously powerful and complex features under the hood, such as integration with dedicated HD processing hardware and seemingly endless audio signal routing options, but for home recording with a simple USB input/output (I/O) interface, you never really need to worry about that side of it. So without further ado, please check out the tutorial video series on the left, which is direct from the Pro-Tools manufacturer, ‘Avid Technology’. This will take you from novice to blazing ahead of anything you could have achieved in GarageBand or other ‘light’ DAW Applications in no time. *Remember, if it gets too cryptic for you to understand on your own, you can book in for a one-to-one lesson with me via the contact page, for a hands-on demonstration and explanation of any problem areas you encounter. |
