Picking & Finger Picking

< This video takes you through the basics on how to hold the pick and pluck the strings with it.

Some points to consider on this:
  • I recommend using a pick of around 1mm in thickness (Jim Dunlop is my preferred brand), but, as the video suggests, if you find this too difficult at first you can certainly use a thinner one to start with.  Just be aware that you’ll likely need to move to a thicker one in time to achieve better sound & feel.
  • A quote to remember is: “Thin picks = thin sound & Fat Picks = Fat sound”!
  • Using a pick will be awkward at first, but do persevere with the holding style demonstrated in this video, and moving toward using a pick of around 1mm thickness, as it is the most universally effective combination for a wide variety of playing styles.
